Lightships, the new musical outpost from Gerard Love, released their debut single, the beautiful "Sweetness In Her Spark" on Monday the 26th of March 2012. Taken from the album Electric Cables (out on Monday the 2nd of April), it's is a laid-back piece of jangly beauty – a flute-peppered pop masterpiece in three and a half minutes. The single is backed by a cover of "Do Your Thing", written by avant-garde composer, instrument inventor and famous Viking enthusiast Moondog, and you can here it right now:

Meanwhile, the band will be performing their first ever shows at the beginning of May, playing shows at Glasgow's CCA on Friday the 4th of May and The Lexington in London on Tuesday the 8th of May. They will be supported by Snowgoose – a band featuring Jim McCulloch, formerly of The Soup Dragons.

Lightships is Gerard Love's new project, making hazy and beautifully warm pop music built around three sonic pillars – tremolo, delay and flute. As well as Gerard, the recording features such Glasgow-based luminaries as Dave McGowan (guitar, Teenage Fanclub), Brendan O'Hare (drums, from the first incarnation of Teenage Fanclub), Tom Crossley (flute, International Airport and The Pastels), the aforementioned Jim McCulloch (clarinet) and Bob Kildea (bass, Belle & Sebastian).

And if you're dying for a bit more awesome Lightships action, why not enjoy the spring sunshine with the appropriately bleached-out video for single, "Sweetness in Her Spark", directed by The Forest Of Black and shot in Glasgow? Here it is:
