Patrick Watson has released a brand new video for ‘Love Songs for Robots’, the title track from his latest album out now via Domino. The video, directed by Academy Award-nominated Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, can be watched now.

Lavis and Szczerbowsk describe the film as “our attempt to create the sort of film Martians might make for humans, if those Martians had only observed us from afar.” The piece is inspired by the sculpture and ballet of the avant-garde artist Oskar Schlemmer, with choreography and dance by Mistaya Hemingway (La La La Human Steps).

Love Songs For Robots was recorded at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and Pierre Marchand Studio in Montreal. Of the record, some of which debuted at private concerts in small loft spaces, Watson explains, “I wanted to make a science fiction R n’ B meets Vangelis erotica with a zest of folk kind of record.” It was only halfway through writing the record when the artist found himself having, by his own submission, “a bad year” did more personal themes begin to creep in. “I started thinking about how emotional reactions were more mechanical than we think and the only thing left between us and artificial intelligence is the act of inspiration. Just food for thought.” Watch the official video for “Places You Will Gohere and see below for track listing.

Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band of almost a decade, which includes Joe Grass (guitars), Robbie Kuster (drums/percussion) and Mishka Stein (bass). The recipient of Canada’s elite Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson and his band have performed to over 100,000 people at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival as well as with full orchestras in Amsterdam and Montreal. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson himself has composed 15 scores for both film and television, including a trailer for “The Walking Dead” and Wim Wenders’ new 3D film “Everything Will Be Fine”, where he performed the songs “Cynical World” (an original for the film) and “Lighthouse.”
