Shares debut single and video 'Bad Timing' on Domino - watch here

Announces Bad Timing EP - out 31st May - and EP launch show on 6th June at Bermondsey Social Club

Arlo Day is the moniker of Alice Barlow, a young songwriter and guitarist from South-East London whose unique ear for melody, haunting vocals and rumbling guitar tones have gained a quiet reputation as one of the capital’s best kept secrets. Newly-signed to iconic indie label Domino, Arlo Day has today revealed her debut single ‘Bad Timing’ and its emotive video. ‘Bad Timing’ is the lead single and title track taken from her first EP - due out 31 May on Domino. The EP is available to pre-order here. Arlo Day will celebrate the record’s release with a special EP launch show at Bermondsey Social Club on 6 June with a full band. Tickets are available here.

Speaking about the process around writing ‘Bad Timing’, Barlow said: “I recorded ‘Bad Timing’ at home last summer, it was a song I wrote after a break up when many things in my life seemed out of sync. I was aiming to capture the feeling of loss and how hindsight can really do a number on you sometimes.” Having cut her teeth in the same burgeoning scene that gave rise to artists like King Krule, Jerkcurb and Puma Blue as well as touring with bands like Whitney - ‘Bad Timing’ displays a first taste of Barlow’s carefully honed, distinctive songcraft: timeless and truly her own.

The video for ‘Bad Timing’ came together during the cold winter months of 2018 with Barlow collaborating alongside friends Holly Taylor, Elena Isolini and Esther Collins. The visuals were shot in the friends’ houses and all around South London. Barlow adds: ‘Like the song, the video is based around the disparity of time and hindsight, and how moments of the past can replay in your mind. We were inspired by photographs by Duane Michals and Katrien de Blauwer, and Lynne Ramsay’s short film Gasman.’

Self-produced and recorded at home, the Bad Timing EP is a trio of tracks that showcase her deft ability to write songs that are at once personal vignettes and brooding canvases for introspection. Lyrics like “What is it that I need to feel satisfied  / your love makes me feel terrified” glisten on the EP’s title track, floating above a bed of swirling guitars perfectly counterbalanced by a rhythm section that combine to spell-binding effect. ‘I guess we’ll call it bad timing, or say it’s lesson learning’ follows, delivering the sentiment with a sharp focus. It’s the kind of heady dynamic that clearly comes naturally to Arlo Day; beautiful turns of phrase are delivered atop instrumentation with nothing extraneous, while well placed sonic flourishes create stunning moments of tension and release  - together, they create something effortless and enticing. Bad Timing introduces Arlo Day as a singular and exciting new songwriting talent.

It is with great pleasure that Domino announce Diviner, the debut solo album from Hayden Thorpe, due for release on 24th May 2019. Along with the news of Diviner, Hayden Thorpe shares the new track, “Love Crimes” plus a video, directed by Alexandra Liveris.

Diviner is a deeply emotional album: lyrically generous in its candid tone and self-awareness, the melodies resonant with sense memory. The album feels like a startling departure from Thorpe’s previous work with Wild Beasts and also unlike anything else being made at the moment.

Written in a deep period of flux; at points in California, Cornwall and at his home in London - the latter acting as a womb-like space where he worked out his new life, story and belief systems. “My adulthood was based on a certain belief system, a band, a family. When it shifted entirely, I had a ghost I had to find a new haunt for,” Thorpe notes. But his belief in songs as transformative entities kept him going. “I believe in the medicinal properties of songs. I believe in their healing properties,” he says. “Songs defy time, they don’t erode or denature, they come with you and reform anew in your mind as and when you need them.”

“I broke up with myself. So this is a break-up album, but not about a relationship. It’s a break-up from a past self, it’s a breakup from the old idea of yourself and therefore every relationship, of all kinds, that you’ve ever had.”

Throughout the record, Thorpe’s voice is a beacon - paired with weaving piano, ambient guitar drifts and propulsive bass lines - his sound is even more powerfully unfettered than before, as if he’d found a new inner voice, a new way to use his instrument.

Previously released title track, “Diviner” is out now, watch the video HERE and stream it HERE.

Hot Chip confirm new album A Bath Full of Ecstasy will be released on June 21st

Announce autumn tour for North America, Europe and UK

Playing London tonight as part of sold out worldwide tour

Hot Chip will release their electrifying seventh album, A Bath Full of Ecstasy, on June 21st. Their third album for Domino, A Bath Full of Ecstasy is the group’s definitive release, crystallising the sound they’ve become celebrated for – bridging euphoria and melancholy with colourful melodies, idiosyncratic vocalisations and pounding electronic pop rhythms.

Recorded in Paris and London, the album sees the group (Owen Clarke, Al Doyle Joe Goddard, Felix Martin and Alexis Taylor) open up to a more adventurous and collaborative song-writing process, choosing to work with outside producers for the first time: Philippe Zdar, the French maestro who’s shaped the magic of Cassius and Phoenix, and Rodaidh McDonald, the Scot who’s collaborated with The XX, David Byrne and Sampha, among others.

Today, the band share the first song from the record, ‘Hungry Child’; for 6 glorious minutes, Hot Chip fuse the uplifting soft pads and melodic keys of classic soulful house and the percussive swing of UK garage, full of sweet vocalisations and rhythmic snaps, to make an instant, club-ready hit. The video for ‘Hungry Child’ is directed by Saman Kesh and features Martin Starr and Milana Vayntrub.

Stream ‘Hungry Child’ here.

Having headlined BBC’s 6Music Festival last weekend, Hot Chip have been debuting new songs at intimate shows in the UK this week; their dates continue in Europe and North America later this month before the quintet reassert themselves as the ultimate festival band this summer, taking in Glastonbury, All Points East, NOS Alive, Pukkelpop and many more. Additionally, in autumn, Hot Chip will embark on their biggest ever headline tours in the UK, Europe and North America.

A Bath Full of Ecstasy is a fresh, invigorating and essential new chapter in the band's career. Alongside the external producers, the album also finds Taylor stepping out of his comfort zone with his lyricism; though rooted in first person, here his storytelling becomes more bodily, and more open to new ideas. The record is a celebration of joy but recognises the struggle it can take to get to that point of happiness. You can hear the pleasure Hot Chip had in creating this album and they want to pass on that feeling to the listener. It is time to get lost in A Bath Full of Ecstasy.

The album artwork has been created by Turner-prize winning artist Jeremy Deller and Fraser Muggeridge Studio.

Fresh from a hugely successful trip to Austin for SXSW Festival, Georgia has returned with her latest single, “About Work The Dancefloor”.

“About Work The Dancefloor” is a defiant slice of electro-pop, exploring love, passion, melancholy and the thrill of finding yourself on the dancefloor. Showcasing Georgia’s upbeat pop brilliance, the track is a reflection of the rich influences of Georgia’s personal experience with club culture. “About Work The Dancefloor” follows the euphoric hit single, “Started Out” which reached the A-list at BBC Radio1 and broke in to the top 15 in the Shazam charts.

“About Work The Dancefloor is a song written in response to the clubbing culture I experienced in cities whilst touring. Going out and getting that emotion or sensation from a collective energy in various spaces. It’s that stuff of old school disco, the thrill of the dance floor” says Georgia on the track. The video was directed by NYSU in Madrid.

Along with the new single, Georgia has announced worldwide tour dates, including a show at London’s Redon on Thursday 20th May. There will be further dates in the UK, France and Australia before festival dates in the summer. Full list can be found below.

Peter Perrett | 25/03/19

Peter Perrett returns once again with Humanworld, his second album since signing to Domino, it will be released on June 7th.

One of the recent past’s most unexpected come-back stories, Peter Perrett – former frontman of The Only Ones - resurfaced in 2017 with How The West Was Won, an album that saw him chart in the UK, star on BBC Newsnight, sell out rooms at Electric Ballroom and Islington Assembly Hall, and collect accolades across the board.

The first song to be shared from Humanworld is the album’s opening track, ‘I Want Your Dreams’.

Stream ‘I Want Your Dreams’ here.

In this new chapter, Peter continues to dissect romance and politics with his trademark sense of sardonic wit and wry humour, if not with more vigour even and a palpable sense of immediacy. Peter adds, “This record has got more urgency and the songs are more concise. Don’t like words such as progression but I hope this is texturally and sonically more interesting than How The West Was Won.”

Peter’s band includes his guitar and bass playing sons Jamie and Peter Jr, drummer Jake Woodward, Jenny Maxwell (Microkorg synthesiser, viola, BVs) and Lauren Moon (keys, drums, BVs) - a tight-knit bunch who have honed this album and the previous one with choice live performances here and in Europe.

Perrett is not unshackled from his past however: “I would say that power within is positive but that pessimism has heavy connotations. I have to look for duality in everything. No matter how bad things are there is always salvation in any given situation. There used to be a part of me, maybe still is, that doesn’t give a fuck about anything; hence my escapist nature. But having children has changed that. Hence the name of the album. You have to look for the good in the world. A romantic belief perhaps.”

“I’m fully aware there are a lot of people who never even thought I’d get to make another album, let alone two, in such a short time.”

Following the years of possibly having too much fun, Peter Perrett is in the process of rebuilding himself, his family, and his art. Working with his sons and fronting another great band, he’s firmly back on track. Humanworld features a production credit for Peter’s son Jamie who also contributes a song to the album (‘Master of Destruction’); and the story of knitting a family back together following a history of chaos and addiction now takes a step closer to centre stage.

Protomartyr announce reissue of out-of-print debut album

No Passion All Technique out May 3rd via Domino

Watch new video for ‘Jumbo’s’ here

Today, Protomartyr finally answer what is probably their most frequently asked question: "When are you going to reissue your first album?" For fans of the band, No Passion All Technique has long been something of a mystery. Not available on streaming services; long out of print (and going for ridiculous prices on Discogs), why was this album so elusive?

On May 3rd, it ceases to be out of reach, as Domino will release a deluxe reissue of No Passion All Technique, along with an expanded digital version that includes four non-album tracks from the same recording session – ‘King Boots’, ‘Bubba Helms’, and ‘Cartier E.G.s’ from the Dreads 85 84 7”, and ‘Whatever Happened To The Saturn Boys?’, which has never before been released. Additionally, today the band shares a video for longtime live staple and fan favorite ‘Jumbo's’, directed by frequent Protomartyr-collaborator Yoonha Park – also responsible for the band's ‘Don’t Go To Anacita’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’ videos from their past two releases.

Stream ‘Jumbo’s’ here.

When Protomartyr - vocalist Joe Casey, guitarist Greg Ahee, bassist Scott Davidson, drummer Alex Leonard - stepped into a studio together for the first time, in November of 2011, they didn’t know they were about to record an album. With only four hours of studio time booked and one case of beer between them, their plan was to walk out with enough songs for a seven-inch single. Instead, at the suggestion of engineer Chris Koltay, the newly formed Detroit outfit recorded as much as they possibly could, in what little time they had.

They left with 21 songs - enough material for two singles and a full-length album that, years later, is still vital listening.

Sold out and out of print shortly after its original release on Urinal Cake Records in October 2012, No Passion All Technique is a sometimes-messy look at one of rock’s most magnetic bands - and lyricists - just as they were coming to life. Primal, cerebral, heartbreaking, funny - it’s an accidental tour de force that’s also become an unlikely collector’s item. “My memory is shot,” Casey says, “but I appreciate now, looking back, how raw and off-the-cuff it was. There’s tons of mistakes in it and that wasn’t because we planned on it. We still can’t really admit that it’s as good as it is. You never want to say that your first is the best, but I’m happy that the first ended up not being terrible. It gave us doorway to what we’d want to do later. ”

Clinic | 05/03/19

Image: Clinic launch pic

Hear ye, hear ye! Roll up, roll up! Welcome to Wheeltappers and Shunters! After an unprecedented seven year break, Clinic, Liverpool’s cherished post-punk pop experimentalists return with album number eight, released on May 10th, by Domino. The unusual name is taken from the long-forgotten 1970s ITV variety show The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, compered by Bernard Manning, which recreated the smoky, boozy atmosphere of Northern working men's clubs for a sofa-bound audience.

“It’s been a pisstake thing between us for quite a few years,” reveals Ade Blackburn, Clinic spokesman, of the show that the album title references. “Whenever we’d talk about a song sounding too ‘cabaret’ or too nice, we’d say, ‘That’s a bit Wheeltappers and Shunters’.

This album is neither a celebration nor a denigration of the culture of the era in which Blackburn and his collaborator-in-chief, Hartley, grew up. “It’s a satirical take on British culture - high and low,” explains Blackburn. “It fascinates me that people look back on the 1970s as the glory days. It’s emerged that there was a darker, more perverse side to that time. When you look back on it now it was quite clearly there in mainstream culture.”

The first track to be shared from Wheeltappers and Shunters is ‘Rubber Bullets’, fifties rock’n’roll is the order of the day as Blackburn grunts “Neanderthal” over a twanging rockabilly guitar riff à la Scotty Moore.

Stream ‘Rubber Bullets’ here.

The album was recorded last year in founding band member Hartley's Liverpool studio, before they brought in Dilip Harris (King Krule, Sons Of Kemet, Mount Kimbie) to mix it. “We thought it felt right to make a fun, dancefloor album in these dark and conservative times,” Blackburn continues. Fun, sure, but this is Clinic – their brand of fun oozes with menace.

The Great Britain that Clinic are evoking is not that ancient, bucolic past of village green cricket, half a mild and hanky-waving Morris Dancers that many seem so determined that the country should return to, but a rather more sleazy past. Clinic’s reverie is for a time when Blackpool was the pleasure capital of the kingdom and the public was kept entertained by travelling circuses and the dirty glamour of the funfair; tacky end of the pier merriment and enforced fun at Butlins; when bell-ringing town criers bellowed their nonsensical broadsides into the ether.

For most bands about to enter their third decade as an entity the well would be running dry, but eight albums in and Clinic still retain the ability to surprise. Clocking in at just over 28 minutes, Wheeltappers and Shunters is an absolute blast, rich in detail and sonic intrigue, those precious minutes stuffed with ideas. “We’d released albums like clockwork every two years, so it seemed natural to have a break,” Blackburn reveals. “It allowed everyone to do some quite oddball stuff, away from Clinic. I think we all wanted a bit more freedom.”

Additionally, Clinic have announced they will play BBC’s 6 Music Festival in Liverpool later this month.
